Turn Notepad into a basic Logbook – Neat Trick!

May 10th, 2012

Notepad has been around forever. I use it mostly to clean text that I copy from the web or from Word documents, or as a temporary place to save notes, passwords and pieces of code. If I need to do some serious editing or coding, I use Notepad++.

It turns out you can use Notepad as a basic logbook. And here’s how:

  1. Open Notepad or a new Notepad file.
  2. Type .LOG (use uppercase) in the first line of the file. Press Enter and go to a new line.
  3. Save the file. Close the file.
  4. Re-open the file and watch the magic: Notepad adds the current date and time to the end of the file and places the cursor on the line after, so you can start your entry right away.
  5. Type your comments, save and close the file.
  6. Every time you open the file, the current time and date will be added to the end of the file and the cursor will just wait there for you.

Freeware for a New Computer

February 15th, 2010

My laptops were stolen from my apartment this weekend, so I was forced to get a new one.I’m supposed to get it tomorrow. Until then, between one post and the other, I created a list of software and apps I want to install on it.

Free Software to Install on a New Computer

Firefox

It’s not just a browser, it’s a work station. I don’t use IE (because it’s a horrible browser) and Firefox definitely qualifies as my most used software. In fact, it’s open on my PC all day long. I use it to read mail, surf the net, develop websites and WordPress themes and manage my sites. Of course, Firefox by itself isn’t enough – you need some good add-ons. Some good Firefox add-ons include: Firebug, Measure-it, Colorzilla, Twitter Bar, TinyURL creator, Better Gmail, ScribeFire and more.

Comodo Internet Security

A free anti-virus and a firewall in one. Comodo can be a bit of a nag sometimes, and has some false positives, but it gives your computer an overhaul great security, and the fact that it’s a firewall, an anti-virus and malware protector combined makes it very useful.

Chrome

It’s a very fast browser, and if you are web developer, you’re gonna need one in order to check that your sites look OK.

Pidgin

I’m not much of a fan when it comes to IM, but Pidgin is a very lean and useful tool. It combines most known instant message apps, it’s free and it’s fun to use. Use it to connect easily to MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo, AIM and other chat networks all at once.

Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware is a high performance anti-malware application that thoroughly removes even the most advanced malware and spyware. It’s very efficient and once saved my butt from a very annoying malware.

Ccleaner

Ccleaner, which stands for Crap Cleaner, does exactly that – it cleans your computer and erases unnecessary files, internet cache and history, and can even fix some registry errors.

Notepad ++

A great advanced text editor, with tabbed interface, configurable syntax highlighting, syntax folding, line numbering, multi-view, bookmarks and much more.

FileZilla

Amazingly enough, FTP is still one of the most useful protocols on the net. FileZilla is a free, fast and easy to use FTP client.

Foxit Reader

A wonderful, light-weight alternative to Adobe Acrobat. Use it to read PDF documents and throw away the bulky has-been Acrobat.

7-Zip

Remember WinZip? Well, forget about it. Although window has a built-in archive support, 7-zip easily surpasses it – and it’s free!

Media Player Classic Home Cinema

This project is based on the original “Media Player Classic” and was created after Gabest, the original author, stopped working on it. Many new player features have been integrated in this player, which is a great alternative to Microsoft’s media player.

AxCrypt

AxCrypt is a freeware file encryption utility that locks down file and folders. It is a very lightweight program, that takes up little space on your hard drive, and is not that memory hungry, compared to other tools. AxCrypt encrypts files that are safely and easily sent to other users via e-mail or any other means. Self-decrypting files are also supported, removing the need to install AxCrypt to decrypt.

Google XML Sitemap Generator is another very useful WordPress plugin. It will automatically generate an XML file with a sitemap of your site, and will send pings to all major search engines when you update the site.

Install SEO Friendly Images

This plugin will do the dirty work for you when it comes to images. SEO Friendly Images will automatically add titles and alt attributes to all of your site’s images.

Check for Valid XHTML

Although WordPress code is usually good, certain themes and plugins might mess it up a bit. Check your site for errors and fix them for a better search engine position.

Avoid Linkware Themes

Sponsored themes, or linkware themes, are WordPress themes which are distributes for free, but with a catch – there are paid links at the footer, which you are not allowed to remove. Google doesn’t like these links, so you are better off avoiding such themes.

Use Permalinks

WordPress has a wonderful advanced option for creating custom permalinks. Choose “Custom Structure” and enter “/%postname%/ “.  This will make your URLs look like this: www.example.com/post-name/.  This puts your post directly at the root level and uses keywords that are in your post title.

eBay Announces Free Auction Listings

January 26th, 2010

Selling on eBay just got a bit more accessible. eBay announced free auction listings and reduced listing fees for fixed-priced items in the U.S. The pricing changes, which take effect on March 30, will lower the upfront costs of selling on eBay.

Beginning March 30th, 2010, eBay will offer two pricing packages in the United States:

  • For sellers who list items occasionally, new “eBay Everyday” rates. Auction-style listings with a start price of 99 cents or less will be free (with no insertion fees for up to 100 listings per month). When an item sells, the seller will pay a flat final value fee of 9 percent of the sale price – and never more than $50. If an item doesn’t sell, the seller pays nothing. Auction listings are a good choice for occasional sellers – people who are trying to get rid of some junk, usually.
  • For sellers who list often, new “eBay Stores” subscription rates offer insertion fees as low as 3 cents per listing for 30 days—a 90 percent reduction over current rates. Larger volume sellers with this “3-cent store” premium rate can move thousands of items at high velocity with full search exposure.
Subscription rates offer basic, anchor and premium store pricing options, depending on the size of a seller’s business. With the new pricing a seller with 250 listings per month would save $80 or $960 a year in insertion fees.
Current store inventory format will be discontinued and will no longer have separate search functionality from core fixed-price listings. With the new eBay Stores rate package, all fixed priced inventory on eBay will have exposure through eBay’s main search functionality, increasing visibility for sellers and improving the search experience for buyers.

eBay is also expanding to all buyers its eBay Buyer Protection program. This program offers buyers even greater confidence that when they buy on eBay, they’ll be covered.

Through eBay Buyer Protection, buyers will have access to customer support specialists seven days a week, as well as a money-back offer for most purchases should a problem arise and the seller is unable to resolve the issue.

Tips for Selling on eBay

  1. Buy before you sell: create a user with a good reputation. It will make things easier when you want to start selling.
  2. Search and research: search Listings on eBay to see what is selling and what are the common prices.
  3. Add clear images: take pictures of the product from different angles and make sure the pictures are sharp and large. Use a good camera and not a webcam!
  4. Give good service: keep your customers happy.
  5. Use HTML: the text editing window in eBay enables you to insert HTML tags. Learn basic HTML to improve the look and feel of your auction page.
  6. Package well: make sure you package sold items well. Use quality packages and envelopes, and don’t forget packing materials like bubble wrap etc.
