Yet Another IE Security Problem

February 4th, 2010

It’s not new – we already know it. Internet Explorer is a flawed browser, with many security holes – and it just ripped itself a new one.

Microsoft has issued Security Advisory (980088), which basically says that Internet Explorer, for those who use Windows XP or who have disabled Internet Explorer Protected Mode, allows access to files with an already known filename and location. In other words – hackers can browse your files vie IE.

Browser versions affected are: Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service 4; Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; and Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Internet Explorer 8 on supported editions of Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3, and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2. Protected Mode prevents exploitation of this vulnerability and is running by default for versions of Internet Explorer on Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008.

Microsoft continues to encourage customers to follow the “Protect Your Computer” guidance of enabling a firewall, applying all software updates and installing anti-virus and anti-spyware software. The company hasn’t issued a patch yet.

I have a better tip for you: USE FIREFOX.

Lifehacker Tests Browsers Speed; Chrome Comes Out on Top

January 27th, 2010

Lifehacker has posted a speed test of Firefox 3.6, Chrome 4, Opera 10.5, and different extensions.

The final scores are (out of 35 possible)

  • Google Chrome 4.0.302.3 (dev): 25
  • Google Chrome 4.0.249.78 (stable): 24
  • Firefox 3.6: 20
  • Firefox 3.5.4: 21
  • Opera 10.5 Pre-Alpha: 25
  • Opera 10.01: 15
  • Safari 4.0.4: 19

And the conclusions:

If you’re using Opera 10.01, you have almost no reason not to upgrade. If you’re using Chrome, the Stable channel is pretty much a wash with the development version, barring any new features that make their way first to the dev channel (which, granted, some certainly will). Firefox 3.6 seems more of an upgrade in features than core components, and Safari, well, doesn’t it have a really neat launch page?

Firefox Now 3rd Fastest Browser

January 24th, 2010

Firefox 3.6 is available for download, and looks like Mozilla has done some real work this time.

The new version of Firefox, 3.6, is about 15% faster than Firefox 3.5, according to tests run by Computerworld. Firefox now renders JavaScript three times faster than Opera 10 and about four times faster than IE8. This data places Firefox as the 3rd fastest browser on the net – after Safari and Chrome. If you want to read more about the Java speed-ups on Firefox, there’s a lot of info here.

According to StatCounter Global Stats, 30% of internet users worldwide use Firefox for web browsing. Internet Explorer has about 55% of the market.
