50% of iPad Users Also Use Windows

April 21st, 2010

It’s not surprising to discover that not only Apple worshipers bought the iPad. After all, Apple has already sold over 500,000 units, so it’s only logical to assume some of them don’t own only Macs and iPhones.

The surprising fact, however, is that according to Chitika Research, about 50% of iPad owners have a Windows computer in their home.

Chitika checked the IP addresses of iPads that used the Chitika network and searched out what other devices came from the same addresses. They limited the results to IP addresses with 5 or less devices seen. The results are based on a sample of over 74 thousand iPads.

Does this mean more Windows users are willing to give Apple a chance, or is this true just when it comes to sexy products like the iPad? And what will happen when Windows-based tablets start appearing in the market?

In the mean time, Apple’s stocks continue to rise, after an impressive quarterly report, and the story about the “lost” iPhone prototype continues to attract interest. The headlines are all Apple these days – and I guess they’ll continue to be this way for a while.

Windows 7 Eats your Batteries

February 3rd, 2010

Microsoft has announced it was looking into a problem concerning Windows 7 and laptops.

Windows 7 users have been complaining of battery issues for a while now. The OS seems to report a drained battery in the laptop – long before the battery is actually exhausted. Microsoft claimed that the problem was in the Windows 7 tool that decides when the battery needs to be recharges.

“We are investigating this issue in conjunction with our hardware partners, which appears to be related to system firmware (BIOS),” a Microsoft spokeswoman said today, “The warning received in Windows 7 uses firmware information to determine if battery replacement is needed.”

Some users believe that the problem isn’t a faulty report – they claim that Windows 7 actually ruined their laptop battery. Users that rolled back to Windows XP claimed that the batteries showed poorer performance. In other words, Windows 7 might eat your batteries.

Last year, reviewers of Windows 7 said the OS cut battery life by almost a third when compared to XP.

Windows 7 is gaining popularity. It now accounts for 1 in 10 computers accessing the Web, according to Net Applications. Still, it seems like there are a lot of people out there who aren’t ready for an upgrade.

In other words, like with most Microsoft products – don’t rush to upgrade. If you have a laptop or a netbook with XP on it, you might want to wait just a while longer before switching an OS or buying a new laptop with Windows 7 on it.

Operating System Revenue Soars 35% in 2009; Non-Games Software Revenue Declines 7%

January 24th, 2010

Despite the recession and the overall tendency to look for free alternatives, it seems that OS makers had a good year in 2009.

According to a report by NPD group, U.S. retail operating systems boxed software revenue increased 35% in 2009. Other software creators weren’t so successful: overall non-games software revenue has dropped by 7% in 2009 to $2.4 billion.

Operating systems (such as Windows 7 and Snow Leopard) was the only category to post both a revenue and unit increase over 2008.  With new operating system releases from both Microsoft and Apple in the back half of the year sales traffic, volume, and interest in boxed software were at very high levels.  Both OS releases showed record sales.

MS Office Home and Student delivered strong sales volumes during both the back-to-school and holiday periods because of an aggressive price promotion. Apple’s iWork 2009 also saw strong unit volume growth as average prices declined more than 15% on the single-user version.

Just a reminder: if you don’t want to pay for your operating system, there are plenty of free alternatives out there, especially Linux-based.
